IP3 Joins National Partners to Advance Catalytic Community Assessments
How can community assessments move beyond compliance and become a catalyst for shared action? That question was at the center of a recent pre-conference workshop, NextGen CHNAs: Advancing Catalytic Community Assessments to Drive Thriving Communities, facilitated by partners from IP3, The Rippel Foundation, Loma Linda University Health, and Fox Valley Data Exchange.
The session invited health systems, public health leaders, community benefit professionals, and cross-sector partners to reimagine the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) as more than a required report. Together, we explored how CHNAs and related processes can help communities build shared understanding, align partners around what matters, and move from data collection to sustained community action.
A catalytic assessment starts with a set of questions:
What conditions do people and places need to thrive?
Whose experiences and stories are shaping the picture?
Where are partners already investing, and where are there gaps?
How can assessment lead directly to strategy, implementation, and shared accountability?
Throughout the workshop, participants explored the Vital Conditions for Health and Well-Being as a practical framework for organizing data, community voice, assets, opportunities, and action. Loma Linda University Health shared how it has integrated the Vital Conditions into its CHNA, implementation strategy, community benefit reporting, and grantmaking. Fox Valley Data Exchange shared how community data infrastructure can support shared decision-making, regional alignment, and long-term stewardship.
For IP3, this work reflects a core area of expertise: helping communities design assessments that are rigorous, accessible, action-oriented, and built for collaboration.
